Treebeards MT500 Recommission
Treebeards MT500 Recommission
After doing a bit to Black and White Armys motor, i started to pull down Pauls 500 motor.. It ran albeit a bit rough and smokey.... Heres why!
I went to put a crank locking bolt in only to find a peice of wood has been jammed in the hole!
It was interesting to see both shims on one side of the rocker instead of one either side!!
It hasnt done much work since previous owner gave it a bit of a decoke..
Shame the piston and rings wern't changed!
Mk1 Clutch is well past its sell by date! Maybe the friction material that came off the plates caused the damage to piston..... further examination at the weekend....
Its going to need a new piston and rebore and new clutch plates and a few repairs to threads and a bit of TLC, should be fine then especially when the dellorto is all cleaned up and its all back together....

Re: Treebeards MT500 Recommission
Here's the latest on Pauls recomission..
Mangaged to get the tree branch out of the crank locking hole! No threads left and evidence of a drill bit drilling into the crank shaft! Thank goodness for air tools to strip the rest of the motor..
Replacement LH crank case being used whilst i get the original repaired..
Lots of damage from bolts too long for the clutch case..
New case fitted
This pic highlights how a lack of oil caused the partial seizure and wear on the cylinder - half of the oil scavange pick up blocked by a bolt being too long.. The threads were also stripped!
Oil pump tested - works great when it gets oil!
New Mark 3 Clutch friction plates fitted
Bottom pulley seal face worn and corroded - reconditioned one fitted..
Starting to take shape - new forged over size piston fitted
Dellorto ultrasoniced and looking like new - engine fired into life after a few kicks and sounds like new!

Re: Treebeards MT500 Recommission
Excellent job. I can't wait to ride it. I must point out for anyone reading this post that the state of this bike was nothing to do with me, I was just daft enough to buy it in this state.

Re: Treebeards MT500 Recommission
All done and ready for the MOT.. Thankfully Paul managed to rescue a now decent MT500. When i checked the front brakes the friction lining came off the shoe! Needless to say its as good now as it ever was and was a pleasure to test ride. It pulls like a train, starts really easy and ticks over like a little sewing machine!
You should have miles of smiles riding this now Paul!
