Stolen MT500

Post by geoffbarnett » Thu Jul 02, 2020 4:36 pm

The Police told me something astounding the other day.
They said that they had no record of an MT500 being reported as stolen.

MT350s do not apply because I know I told them when mine was stolen.

My question is, has anyone on this forum had an MT500 stolen and reported that theft to the Police?
Approximately when (year) would be helpful.

Did they have an MT500 in their posession? was it only in their district or whole UK?

Sadly , you see MT500 frames and front sections on ebay with no VIN plates.

If a bike is stolen for a joyride then dumped, the plate will probably be there. Where you see them with no plates on the frame you know that they are probably stolen with the intent to make money

How long details are kept may well depend on the local police force. At some point data will be archived or deleted

Not necessarily. I've bought two Armstrongs in the past that the plate has been held on with next to nothing, they get a bit loose and vibrate eventually wearing through the fixing holes and fall off. Both bikes were 100% legit, one didn't have a motor and the VIN plate was in the box of bits that came with it. The other had the VIN plate wore in half by the clutch cable erasing half the numbers.

I said 'probably' because the same seller often has lots of other MT parts for sale as well. Getting hold of a replacement blank plate and having the correct number stamped in has been done for years, as you say they can be damaged or lost

Hence , I am not saying that they don't drop off or get worn, merely that no legitimate owner would need to sell without a plate. You are right, they could sell but I would suggest are unlikely to. I can't recall anyone on the forum selling an MT500 without a plate but owners have renewed them.

Neither of these were bought off forum members, I'm just lucky.

So, please reply if:

1. You have had an MT500 stolen or you know of someone who has.
2. You know that the bike in question was reported to the police.
3. You know that the bike was not recovered.

Please reply only if all of the above apply.

Ewan Mess had an Arrmstrong stolen in Bury St Edmunds in May. Don't know if it's been recovered.

Not to worry, I see you can buy a MT500 VIN plate off that auction site. Says he'll stamp your requested numbers on it. Is that legal?
