Best Defender galvanised chassis supplier?

Post by clanmike » Mon Sep 02, 2019 4:22 pm

The time has come to seriously consider replacing the chassis on my 1998 110 300tdi Defender (I’m fed up with the annual pre mot welding routine)
There appears to be 3 main suppliers Richards, Marsland and Shielder but who’s best?
An internet search reveals disgruntled buyers of all 3 with one taking the supplier concerned to court.
Has anyone on here done it and who supplied the chassis and were there any issues with their chosen supplier or the chassis itself?
Thanks in anticipation
Mike

I don’t have a Landy at the moment, but in my day with them it was definitely Richards.

My son has 3 Landy 110 restorations on the go, 1 for a new chassis, 2 large repair sections. He prefers Richards but we have not found anything perfect, we assume they're all copies of copies so it's only fair to make allowances. The big thing to watch out for is "re-conditioned" , "re-built" etc etc, we have seen some full chassis at a place that does "galvanising ". The chassis were from firms that do chassis rebuilds and replacements. They are not galvanised, merely hot dipped which is a different process. The stack of 6 we looked at were mostly appalling bodges , rubbish welding, bent brackets and other problems, all coated with hot dip.
I'm not suggesting don't buy such a chassis, just have a very careful examination before you pay up. !! We would have only bought one of the 6 we saw. The rest were not worth all the work to swap a chassis over.
Take an experience welder with you - he (or she ) will spot poor work.

Regards, Terry.
