MT350 In Sevice pictures ???

I seem to have a personal thread on this forum.

My mate's photo taken in Fort Bragg in '96 during 5th Airborne Brigade exercises. MT-350 seen on the photo was used by Para RMP.

N/S pannier lid looks odd in the pic.

Looks like it's missing and they've replaced it with a plastic bag to me.

I am sure Monkey will correct me if I am wrong, but in War time and on Exercises one of the RMP's responsabilities is to mark out routes, such as the MSR (main supply route) etc. They used to do this using TAC signs, I am sure you have seen them out and about, normally a black circle with a white arrow in it. This was to stop the dumb truckers from getting lost ( it rarely worked). The TAC signs are normally placed on metal folk like things and prongs driven in to the ground.

So why the story, I am betting that this RMP has taken of the lid of the NS pannier so he can quickly deploy his tack signs without even getting of his bike.

When tactical, it is quite normal to take the shine off headlights with mud, cover them with a bit of hessian or whatever. A headlamp reflector can be a giveaway for miles and if you're doing recce work, a glint of sunlight is all you need to start searching an area with binos, image intensifiers or even the Mk 1 eyeball.

The further forward you are the more important it is, but good practice for rear echelon elements who provide vital supplies to the forward troops.

Things have moved on since the picture was taken and the threat of detection from the air is now much greater of course, but still worthwhile taking basic precautions against detection.

sorry about lapse..just read this one. RMP on MSRs used name or symbol route signs, black rectangular bitumen type. Disc directionals were used off route into HQ element type circuits. The little wire toasting fork sign holders were used along with the heavier (much) pin stakes generally belted in with a hammer. The pannier lid could have been removed to accommodate these as they were lengthy, could also take out and position stake and sign without need to continually dismount. Never lean too far though a bugger to pick up with all kit on. also ex monkey

We were teaching on 500's to brand new learners doing follow part 2 tests years before the civvy testing ever did.

Yes they were flat pannier racks, black frames, silver fork lowers and shiny silver rims

As were the red ones
