Sounds like too much air getting in and giving a very weak mixture. Usual culprit is the carb/engine tube.

What do you mean by the engine tube? The intake?

It looked pretty tight, the bike is only 10 years old with just about 500 miles on it. Think the rubber could be rotten or that the hose clamp wasn't tight enough?

After looking through the carb I see it's clean as a bell. I'll put it back together tonight and make sure the clamps are extra tight.

By the way the fuel mixture is set to 3 1\2 turns out, however I don't think any of you guys are running the same carb as the 500e so I guess there is no point in asking what you guys are running on that.
