Location: At bridge over River Brain on S side of Braintree, on E side of former main road (A131).

Condition: Removed

Description: 2001/04/__ Hexagonal pillbox, now DESTROYED, covering the bridge.

Location: On Rayne Road, up on hill, on other side of road from Lido, Braintree

Condition: Removed

Description: 1999/02/28 Pillbox, now demolished, possibly a type 22. A slight depression in the ground marks its location.

Location: Junction of Clockhouse Way, Cressing Road and Chapel Hill, Braintree

Condition: Removed

Description: 1996/__/__ Allan Williams turret, demolished c1960

Location: On a triangular traffic island in the middle of a road junction on the B1053 N of Braintree.

Condition: Removed

Description: 1999/__/__ Pillbox [probably type 24], first noted by recorder as schoolboy during war, but since destroyed.

Location: Deanery Corner, N side of junction, on edge of woodland, Bocking

Condition: Removed

Description: 1999/02/28 Pillbox, possibly a type 22 or 24.

Location: Porter's sandpit, NE of King's Bridge, Bocking - an area covered by 1960s housing. [with site location plan drawn on form].

Condition: Removed

Description: ____/__/__ Ammunition dump of the Bocking Home Guard. The sandpit was used to store molotov coctails and phosphorus bombs. [information to the recorder from Dick Oliver].





Location: King's Bridge, at the bottom of Church Street, Bocking

Condition: Extant but condition unknown

Description: 1999/02/28 Bridge has a row of demolition chambers at N end, still hidden under modern road surface.

I like this thread as it is one of my interests. I have seen a lot of the defences in France including the submarine pens ,atlantic wall etc but i really should make an effort to check out more on my own doorstep. I work at RAF Honington and sometimes Wattisham and there are several sited in and around the camps and along the river Thet and down the A11 towards barton mills.Where i used to work there was a pillbox that we used for a gunpowder store which used to guard the old railway works at mildenhall. I will post some photos when i get the chance.

This is just fascinating...

I never knew about the "Stop Line" or that any such serious preparations had been undertaken. I remember seeing pictures of 'fire lines' at beaches and the Home Guard. But never knew that there had been such a massive undertaking or that the pillbox lines had been built.

Has anyone done any books on this preparation? There is a good Wiki posting on Brit anti-invasion preparations. But I had no idea this even existed. And the map is really interesting.

It's 70 and beautiful here... but DMV (our MoT) has screwed up my registration so my MT500 has no plate yet. After 2 months waiting. So off to do chores and post-winter clean-up on the farm.

But thanks for posting this. In lieu of riding one, I can at least learn something today.

For anyone living in North Yorshire and Cleveland there is an excellent series of books being produced, area by area, listing all the war time defenses from 1900 onwards that existed, as well as maps and photographs of those still existing. It is called "Defence of theUK" and so far 4 volumes have been produced. It came about following a project by, I think, English heritage, between 1995 and 200? which aimed to document all remaining ww2 defences. The group of folk undeetaking the survey in their area of North Yorkshire and Cleveland seemingly got so carried away tat they were able to produce these books.

Check it out, it is worth looking at if you are coming up this way.

its at wharles.i asume it was a bunker for HMS inskip.???
