Ben's MT350 Rebuild

Post by neoxerox » Sun Aug 14, 2011 3:10 pm

So I was browsing the internet one day, as you do, when I came accross Withams SV. I saw an MT350 bike and at that point decided I wanted one. Stumbled onto the MT riders forum and a wealth of information before buying one unseen from a bloke near Edinburgh and having it couriered down to me in Leicester.

Pic of the bike from the Gumtree listing

Getting there

Image

Replacement (silver) and original knackerd (green/black) front end comparisson - Looks like I need to rebuild the old forks, find a new set of yokes and wheel etc!

Image

Current state of the bike, pretty much just the engine left in. So todays job is getting that out!

Image

So on the list of jobs to do/parts to get is:

Rub down frame where neccessary and repaint
Reweld fuel tank tabs
Pull/fill fuel tank dent and repaint
Re-bend handlebars/get replacements
Rebuild front suspension. New axle, yokes and wheel (though maybe try to make one between the replacment wheel and old hub if the spoke numbers/rim size are suitable). Repaint legs
Fix handlebar switch units
Make up a wiring loom for the rear of the bike - this had been cut off at some point...
Rear indicators & brake/rear light
Recover the seat
Rub down all plastic bits to get rid of the dodgely applied black paint
Rebuild dash
Replace most bolts with stainless as things go back on

And many many other things I've forgotten to mention and that will crop up along the way!

Sorry for the quality of the pics, i'll get my normal camera up and running again soon hopefully! (before the actually putting back together anyway!)

So got the swingarm, chain and foot pegs off. Drained the oil from frame and engine and unbolted the upper frame from the engine.

I love the way that I've been able to put the bike on the stand and not move it once and now i have an essentially bare engine, I like the design of this bike!

Now the real work begins!

Stripped down the original fork legs yesterday and they're perfect internally :D happy days.

Ordered new seals from Apophis to stick in them before they wait for yokes and an axle.

Also started grinding the rusty bits from the upper frame but then my angle grinder gave up the ghost  Off to screwfix/machine mart for a new one tomorrow!

Pics to follow...

I know him well and can vouch for the fact that he is a very honest bloke to deal with.
