LOL, he rang me up and said "Mate, I'm f***ing f***ed. My f***ing f***er engine is f***ed"

He wasn't too far from me so I rode out with some food/hot drink for him.

He still has to investigate, but something wrong with his engine.

Thanks everyone - yesterday was quite an adventure! I left home at 1000hrs and finally got to Brighton at 1900hrs !

The symptons were total loss of drive whilst at 70mph. I assumed (hoped) it was the belt again, hence the removed panel. I was mortified to find the belt in good order. There is a rattling in the head when I push it which doesnt change whether the clutch is in or out and the spark plug hardly turns for removal, it will come but very stiff. I think I have either blown a hole in the piston or more likely, somehow knackered a valve.

Ill be whipping the lump out this week and hope to stick my 604 in with the Apophis made exhaust etc. Then Ill open the 500 skull and look at what remains.

Funny thing is, I had decided on the way down to sell this engine, I guess it heard my thoughts!!!

Ill update you when I know...

 A fine example of 'dropping a valve'! Go to the top of the class! Always worth mounting on a plynth and having pride of place next to your toolbox! :D

What's the bottom end like?
Looks fine, a few fragments dropped in when I pulled the top off but should clear out. Question is, what to do now. The barrel is (was) a 500 nicasil and the head a 604 but I had the longer stroke like the MZ....
