You'd pay that much for a nos Triumph or BSA part but not for Armstrong parts.

Got the MT500 through another MOT.
Also, got told why there is oil leaking from the clutch cable... so that's a job for tomorrow.

The MT has recently developed an oil leak from the point where the clutch cable leaves the engine.
I was reliably informed on the MT FB group that there is an O ring on the fitting at the end of the clutch cable, this turned out to be the source of the leak.
Fist thing was to work out how to get the cable out. Following a few posts on this very forum it only took a few minutes to realise that the slot in the clutch arm is on one side, not at the front as I had imagined. Once I figured that out, my paperclip special tool did its thing in moments.
The O ring fitted to the cable end seemed a little small for the job, plus I had nothing the right size so I found something slightly larger in all dimensions, persuaded it into place and slid it all back in the hole (Phnar!).
I have done a quick whizz round the block, but didn't realise it's school out time, so another run will be needed to be sure, but there is certainly no sign of a leak now.

Well done NeilM, glad the paperclip helped you guide the cable out and into its slot.
Hopefully your oil leak will be a thing of the past. Be sure to check the oil level after you've run the engine for five minutes. If it is overfull , it will still leak. I used to run about halfway between min and max

I could be wrong, but the arm on mine didn't look like that one. That looks like a flat blade that has been bent back on itself, mine has more of a cup at the end and has a definite slot cut into one side.lardmarc wrote: ↑Wed Nov 10, 2021 3:59 pm
It's not a slot, It's a loop.

I should mention that my engine is from an MZ, so it may be different.
Wirralman:
When I first bought my 500 it had freshly been 'enthusiastically' filled with oil. It took a while to trace the leaks back to the top of the frame. This time around I filled it cold until the oil just touched the bottom of the dipstick, this seems to bring the level up to just over half way when hot. Which is just as well, because that was all the suitable 20-50 oil I had.

350's, Aprilia and some others have a cast alloy clutch release cam. Still just as easy to get the clutch cable into it unless you have Parkinsons or hypothermia.

That may well be what is fitted to mine.
Wiggling the cable to get it loose, while laying on the floor of my garage, I can just imagine how much fun changing a clutch cable at this time of year in a nice wet, muddy green lane would be.
