Thought I'd replace the bump stops on the rear shocks with some new ones from Force, not for any particular reason apart from the old ones looked like a cross between a piece of rubber and a Crunchy bar. However, like all good maintenance it often throws up other hidden issues.
Turned out both rods were bent, one to an extent that it interfered with the its movement. Not having any spares on the shelf I bent them both back with a bit of brute force. Probably not the thing to do, but they don't leak and now move freely.
Both had very little damping (not counting the sticky bent one) due to a lack of oil. There was no obvious leaks, probably just 35yrs of gradual escape.
I did soak the screw-on rod ends overnight in easing oil, which I'm sure helped there easy removal.
I had to use a pair of spring compressors to get the fixings off to allow the spring removal. However, I moved the circlip to the top/end position to hopefully soften the suspension a bit, which also meant I didn't need to compress the springs on putting them back on.
A good clean up and going over with a rattle can finished the job off. Apart from looking smarter they should now actually help with the handling and not hinder it

I took the bike out this evening, and having shocks that actually work and moving the clip to the top setting has made a real positive difference to the handling - unsurprisingly much less skittish, especially over 60mph. Don't know why I'm so surprised!!

Gladys has a puncture in the front tyre so off with the wheel. The valve has popped out of the inner tube so waiting on a new one from force motorcycles. When taking off the wheel I noticed the fork stantions were soaked with oil so also ordered new seals and front forks removed. Gladys is looking sorry with no front end but reassured her she will soon be better.

Fitted a delorto to the 405 and sorted the back brake bloody thing flies now,thanks Gary

New front inner tube, new fork seals. All replaced and fitted back, in the space of a Friday afternoon. Aching back now so time for a beer. Ready for meeting up with the guys on Sunday.

Replaced the temporary bungee kickstart return after spring snapped four miles away from the Despatch Rally campsite. Deadgrass was my first rescue call so he turned up to tow me to the campsite, he did bring Kev Van Winkle with him for moral support (Piss taking). Diverted across on Tuesday to owner of the old club stores supplies as I knew he'd have everything I needed to get back home unaided.



I even managed to get MTbandit involved with the spannering as he handles hangovers much better than I do.

Well return to MT350 ownership has certainly brought big grin. An ideal bike for my style of riding these days with emphasis on local country roads rather than long trips and speed.
