Mt Touareg - Elec start into a 500 frame
Re: Mt Touareg - Elec start into a 500 frame
Hi again
not had much time to do much with the project however today i did manage to sort out most of the front end, i had a front end with a disk brake and also upside down forks, the new yolks and stem didnt fit, nowhere near so we had to get the stem out of the mt bottom yolk and fit it into the new one,
which involved lots of sawing, rather big drifts, hammers and lots of heating it up, if in future anyone has to do this its SO MUCH EASIER to nock it out downwards just watchout for the threads on the top of the stem,
the stem extracted rather well, however the bottom yolk was well and truly wrecked
so all that was left was to make the stem fit into the new bottom yolk
and as you can see it dosnt look too bad
and finally not too mt ish but my other distraction taking up much of my time is my 77 commando

oh yea almost forgot thanks alot to TDIPower and sirguzzi who advised on the positioning of the lower cam pulley, and why it was in such a place, and everyone else with their positive-ness

Re: Mt Touareg - Elec start into a 500 frame
Hi William,
I`m currently pottering away on my 604 project and was wandering where to put the primary filter. I`d thought about making up new mounts to put it just behind the kickstart, hanging off the frame.
I like the look of your solution, just off to the garage to see if I can do the same, although I think the engine guard may be in the way.
Keep up the good work.
Stuart

Re: Mt Touareg - Elec start into a 500 frame
just got the front end fitted to the bike with its shiny disk
and i need some advice on shocks i want my bike to be lower as i dont intend to do that much offroading, as it is to be my road bike, the mt shocks are about 17" and i have a new set of 14" ones, but they dont leave me with that much clearance, and i dont knowwhat to do haha,
thanks for all you guys comments and help

have now fitted the shocks and they do look right, they fit rather well and i dont think they will cause anything to rub.

Re: Mt Touareg - Elec start into a 500 frame
Now its sunny weather the mods can begin again got the mt out took it for a spin around the field . . . as the card still hasnt been correctly set up i thought id have a go, so there it was on the centerstand ticking over roughtly . . . and then it stopped, completely ceased, engine had somehow run out of oil, so i checked the tank, totally full and stone cold, after some investigation and dismantling i found the problem, the feed from the tank had become blocked . . . by iteself, the pipe had torn inside (i assume it was when i origionally fitted it) and a tab of rubber pipe had totally blocked the oil way. So after a new piece of pipe had been fitted i flooded the bore for a week with diesel to free it off, which seems to have done the trick, however i didnt strip it down so dont know what the insides are like :S how much damage can running it dry do, if the big end is still oiled and its just the piston that binds to the bore a little what damage can be done. ah well on a happier note i fitted the origional headlamp cowel back on to the new forks and am trying to fabricate a speedo/taco holder with some warning led's. i was also thinking of fitting a pressure gague for the oil.
and the bike in all her beauty
oh another thing, i wrote to the dvla saying i had put the engine in, and they want a massive set of things certifying the engine, recipts, garage certification of bore etc, to avoid all this hastle i want to put it into a crank case thats a mt500 one, is there any problems with having a L.H case from a 350 and a R.h (with the correct numbers on it) from a 500. ( so i can keep the electric start etc) will there also be a issue with putting the 6 speed gearbox into the 500 engine??

Re: Mt Touareg - Elec start into a 500 frame
After two years i have decided to finally finish this project, i uncovered it from the depths of one of the sheds and once again began to get it something like. After it ran dry it scrapped the barrel and piston so it is now a 500. Although the 350 has a shorter stroke, so its more like a 438cc, but with lower compression than the 500. So it now runs again HURRAH!, starts on the button stops etc and pulls like a train when its warm. But the dellorto carb i have on it was jetted for the 350 so its very weak when trying to start. I wouldnt know how to find out what jet to fit in order to ensure that the mixture was correct. But if anyone might happen to know i would appreciate it. Otherwise it can have an amal mk2 as i have a box of jets that could be trialed. After a bit of thought i decided it was a stupid idea to put shorter shocks on it i intend to use it off road. I had intended to do my bike test but things got in the way i.e university. Also i have got rid of the front end i made up as it just didnt look right. I prefer the rugged mt forks that are much harder to bend!
All i need to do now to finish it is to swap the swinging arm for one with the side stand lug, as i dislike the front mounted sidestand, a set of indicators finding and fitting, the carb setting up, another panier rack as i only posess one, and if i get very bored i was thinking about reducing the height of the barrels to increse the compression to give it a little bit more grunt, as the stroke is 7mm shorter than it was intended to be. But here is the practically finished article
