New Rever mapping app

Post by Bonnielad » Sat Dec 31, 2016 8:37 am

Take a look at this and tell me what you think. Ideal for logging our green laning. At first viewing it looks perfect, I'm just a bit suspicious of why it's free.

I believe you only get a limited version of the App for free - you have to subscribe to a small monthly fee to get the premium version. Apart from that, it looks like a very good App for adventure riders!

Here is their email reply:

Hey Steve,
Yup, Rever works just about everywhere. What we would suggest for a ride like that is that you upgrade to premium, even if you only do a monthly ($5.99) subscription just for that trip. That way you would be able to download and cache the maps for Europe before your trip and load your planned routes ahead of time. Then when you are over there you can turn your phone to airplane mode and not get hammered by roaming charges (I speak from experience on this!). Let us know if you have any other questions.

yes looks OK - you would need the premium version to get full use of all the mapping. Not sure if I want to rely on my phone as my nav aid - still prefer to get my routes on my GPS so not sure if it is something I would use but great for adventure riders.

I use a Sony Xperia without a SIM card for my Sat Nav. I installed the program and then tried it without a SIM and low and behold it worked. I don't like the xperia as a phone but as a SAT NAV it is great, works abroad as well as UK.

I bought a Garmin Quest II cheap from ebay (actually got two for about ÂŁ10 each as they are now obsolete). It records tracks which can be added to various maps including Map Source and OS maps. I can plan routes with waypoints (such as start and end of lanes). The Quest is designed for motorbike use and is waterprooof, relatively small and tough.

Hm. Seems I need to implant a younger brain to replace my luddite lack of understanding. I really have no idea where to start with this sort of stuff. Or maybe I should latch onto another rider that's already got it sorted!

You can get Open source maps which include trails and loadable through basecamp on devices that will accept them for a small fee .I have a Garmin Etrex 20 with a UK Opensource map provided by John Thorn that cost ÂŁ25 for the whole of the UK

https://www.gpsfiledepot.com/index.php

Lots of other sites that offer Opensource mapping [some free] that you can overlay on one another
