Turns out what I thought of as Henderson’s third clapper which had been converted to a culvert is in fact an entirely modern confection built with the new track to the farm and that the third clapper (to which she kindly directed me) had been used until relatively recently to carry the track used by twentieth century postie and eighteenth century packhorse alike.

You meet the nicest people on a bridge.

Stones again

Post by NVNL » Sun May 25, 2014 8:06 am

As the longest day approaches our thoughts are naturally drawn to standing stones. In years gone by I have tried to include a visit to standing stones in the 216 Rideabout, but it’s an intention more honoured in the breach than the observance.

Thus it was with no little excitement that I spotted a line of standing stones over by Stuffle.

Umpteenth job of this very, very fine morning is to ride round my manor thinking of John d’ Earlay as portrayed by Michael Williams riding the circuit of his manor while myself collecting portable fencing components from their winter homes in the now well-grown nettle patches.

Of course I now wish I had worn a morning suit on the grounds that in a motorcycle action shot the flapping tails of a frock coat look even better than a clotted cream suit.

Obviously it is a pound, that much is plainly visible, but the crow part comes from the fact (hmmn) that back before the Conquest St Aniet (local saint, arguably half-brother to King Alfred) remonstrated with the local farmers who failed to attend Sunday Service on the grounds that they needed to stop up here to scare off the crows.

On the road the cattle come and go, not speaking of Gregory Corso, Neal Cassady, or Jack Kerouac.
