Can Am Project - Rise of the Phoenix!
At the start of the year I bought a Can Am from Rocketron as I fancied something different and it was a '100% complete bike'.............
I had initially thought to just stick it on the road and have a play with it before deciding on whether to restore it or not. I encountered a few problems at that point, like it not having an electrical system, a fuel tank that was full of rust and leaked like a sieve or any brakes.....
So I decided to do a strip and rebuild. Its been a bit of an education for a number of reasons. Firstly I did not take most of it apart so had no memory of where bits went and there were a lot of bits missing that I subsequently identified from drawings.
I had to make a lot of the parts for it myself on the lathe/milling machine which was actually a lot of fun to do.
Paul at Military Can Am needs a mention here as he has been amazingly supportive in getting me bits and pieces that I needed on a constant drip and has been full of sage advice. He is a real gentleman and I would not have got to the stage I am at without his help.
I also had a lot of help from Tony (forumite Can AM) who is a good friend and a Can Am nut and also Can Am clinic.
Ok so thats the Oscar speech over. A few photographs follow. As usual all comments and questions welcome.

Very nice Mr Shiney.
Attention to detail looks fantastic. I love the photo of the various spindles. Did you plate them yourself? I seem to recall reading one of your posts a few months ago which said you're able to do some plating.

I made all the spindles and zinc plated them myself. It did take me two attempts to make the front spindle as I cut it half a mil under size at the end the first time and it would not clamp properly.silverfox wrote:Very nice Mr Shiney.

I have decided not to install an engine, I am going to fit it with pedals and make it an eco friendly version........... Engine is being rebuilt by Minter for me as I wanted it restored to factory new standards so its a total tear down and rebuild.
George - Yes I have been recording the parts for you. Lots of bits of paper all over the workshop with them on at the moment!!!

Steve will be very pleased to hear the the cases will be collected this evening! He is pushing his luck with having it all assmebled before i leave for the yorky mondo tomorrow!

Thanks George. I did make some drawings in my little notebook with dimensions etc in case I needed to make parts again in the future. Some bits were surprisingly difficult to do. I learnt the hard way not to turn axles in the chuck but rather turn them between centres as an example. Bushes and spacers were easier to do but getting the finish was a bit of an art and bear in mind I was using the lathes at college on the side I had to teach myself to set them up as well.
