From the ashes
Re: From the ashes
Slow progress, as I have been working on my Triumph Herald. I have had a go at cleaning out the oil tank after it came back from the powder coaters. I used diesel to swill the tank out and was surprised to see the amount of metal filings that came out. The magnet on the plug attracted most of it and I suppose there is some beads from the blasting although I was told it would be sealed prior to blasting. I will be repeating the process a few more times as I don't want any problems with the engine. I have sourced a 500 engine with an electric leg which I will be using while I get the original sorted,Rome wasn't built in a day !

Hi trifire,
Glad tosee you're. Making progress..
I'd say your motor is salvagable but would recommend splitting cases and checking all of the bearing cages which are plastic and may have melted too.

Re: From the ashes
I will be in contact soon, it would be interesting for the forum to see how much damage the rotax lump can take.

Re: From the ashes
Update on the bike, I must have swilled out the frame at least 20 times over the last few weeks, still getting bits out but its getting less and less. I have refurbished the rear shocks, the springs needed tidying up due to rust. I was just going to replace with Hagons but as I'm tall the Ohlins suit better. Most of the components from the donor bike need replacing due to rust. I have been collecting bits and pieces, mostly from ebay. I may have some duplicate parts that I will keep or sell. I dare not count the cost so far.
Hope to have the engine back from Minter soon, then I will start to put it back together. Hope to have it ready for the next Exeter Trial.

Hi trifire,
I tried diesel first to clean the oil tank (killed my grass again) lol but l ended up using the garden hose on full to flush out ,a bit messy but did the job.

Re: From the ashes
Engine has been back now for a few weeks, installed into frame with swing arm, thanks to Minter. I have fitted rear shocks, side and centre stand. The forks are on but not the wheels, I need to overhaul the calipers and the rear sprocket carrier. I am using my original sprockets that was fitted just before the fire as they are in better condition than the donor ones. I will also be using the original wheel adjuster cams as the others are too corroded. I notice that I had two left cams, which after cleaning up will go back on. I never noticed this before but it seemed to have worked. I did get some from ebay but they were for the MT 500 and are a different size for the spindle.
The carb is fitted and has come from Force, its the upgraded kit which I believe has to have the air box modified. I have read up on this and not sure I want this mod, I was happy with the MT's performance and MPG before. How noisy is the mod and can the carb be put back to standard and save drilling the air box?
I have cleaned up the stainless steel exhaust which survived the fire and painted it with BBQ paint. The original front wheel was not affected by the fire and has had a new sahara 3 tyre. A rear wheel was purchased and that has had a new sahara as well. The donor bike came with army special tyres which are too much off road for me, they may have to be sold on to fund the rest of the project.
Things to do are ; sort out the electrics, I have the choice of 2 secondhand looms both with corroded terminals, overhaul the brakes, fit the controls and replace the plastics, plenty to keep me busy. The plastics have been deep cleaned but have deep scratches so I may replace some. I have a new seat and was thinking of fitting a new plastic petrol tank to make it look like how it use to be.
With a planned house extension I will soon find my spare time filled with lots of decorating so I better get a move on.

Re: From the ashes
Taken last week, prior to the forks going on.
The state of the donor caliper, I will be using the original front one as the fire didn't reach that.
