From the ashes
Re: From the ashes
Just testing the smaller size picture. The engine is worse than I thought,I haven't dismantled the clutch yet, but the plastic cog behind has melted.

One valve cover warped with the heat, but you are right about magnesium.jungleMTbiker wrote:Thank goodness your magnesium bits didn't catch fire!

Re: From the ashes
Hi need to bear in mind if heat was applied to the steal parts that they may become softer or brittle, hope not.

Now's your chance to improve things a bit--I read somebody else talking about using a 400W stator from an F650--is that a direct bolt-on modification?

Not to sure what was the cause of the fire. It was either petrol coming out of the fuel cap, I had not long filled it up or fuel pipe that came loose. The tank was a plastic tank in very good condition, not sure where the ignition source came from.
In my previous job as a firefighter I had been to many vehicle fires and been responsible for completing the fire report. Many were deliberate and it was mostly naked flame on to upholstery as a best guess. On accidental fires it was a case of looking at the vehicle and asking the owner questions if a source was not easy to identify. More often that not they would be put down as electrical faults. Mine was definitely a case of fuel vapour igniting.
I have now got a donor bike in the garage, it looks very sorry for its self, the tax disc expired some years ago and it has been stored outside. The frame is quite rusty, and the cam belt housing was full of water. The chain has seized as well as the disc's with rust. I should be alright for all the plastics , all the mechanical bits will need renewing or refurbishing. My stainless steel exhaust survived as well as the forks and the front wheel, but my engine maybe too far gone.
I have already got hold of some gaskets, filters and a cam belt. George is sending me some nuts and bolts etc and Nick at Force is only up the road and LMS less than 4 miles, things are looking up.

Sounds like you should get one good one out of two wrecks, and may be a few spares to sell/exchange.
