I got one of these helmets off ebay, not knowing they were a military item. It's a cromwell, and that flip up visor had a tendency to flip up at high speed and try and snap your neckRoy W wrote:

I was at Ripon, 1982 to 85 and did a year with 51. I've still got my Cromwell helmet, I use the visor on my current lid. I bought my ex army BSA B40 around that time, I painted blue so it wouldn't look like a bike from the MT. Can Ams were the current bike, though B40's were still being used up to 88, probably by TA units.

I almost was!
My first posting was 38 Engr Regt and within a month the squadron was sent to Flax Street Mill in Belfast to beef up numbers in 40 Regt RA in an infantry role
Talk about confusing for a first posting!

Did I teach you to ride?Mick H wrote:Hi Roy,

Pat Craze was the REME Staffy in 87, then changed to the tall blonde haired chap, name escapes me. I was the one who had his fingertips chopped off by the Saxon Hatch in '88, might ring a bell.
They were good times to be in 51, if not a little hectic.

I could ride before I got there and had lots of off road experience so I ended up doing just about all the bike work. Scouse Mac used to threaten to kill me as I could kick start it and he couldnt despite his size, I did my test with Steve Windle and rode a few events with him. After that I went on and rode with the REME team and BAOR. Yes enjoyed my time in Ripon, I was their when Pat Craze was the tiffy and I cant remember the guy after him but yes I was their then.
