You have to remove the lower one otherwise the starter won't fit, he'll be putting another hole in further up anyway like the 350.

This was easy enough to do with just two straight cuts. also kept the original hole for the feed and the drain plug stayed.

Sure you can just cut it off, I just try to keep it looking as original as possible. :D
If you keep the original hole for the oil pipe make sure you remove all the old weld as its a bugger to weld over the top.
While your at it you could add another bolt tube further up so you can attach 350 panniers. Done that for Moose and waiting to see if he gets around to finishing it. ;)

Moving the drain to the side sounds like a good idea I might do this. I'm also thinking of moving the filter so its the same as the 350.

I plan to use a 350 shoe. It looks like it won't need to be modified and I can then use the 500 one on another project.

I shaped mine to give it an 'original' look. Even though the bike is built and running (but not finished) I'm not overly happy with the pipe coming out. Planning to chop it off and maybe fit a hydraulic swivel fitting to give the hose an easier route behind the cam cover.

Best of luck with the project.
