:lol: Your method not technical & precise enough! Changing the 'weight' of the oil and increasing or decreasing the 'air gap' and spring preloaders alters the performance of the forks quite a bit! even for these basic type forks...

Pouring in the 'recommended' amount is not far off tho!

Thats it! Just waiting for a carb rubber, brake hose and speedo cable guide and it'll be almost as good as it left York USA!! The rust is courteous of Withams!

Back brake, serviced and fresh fluid added - screw drivers are to stop the pads closing up!! one piston was seized but all working proper now.. Old fluid blended in well with the rust!

Does this look familiar to anyone! The tank was full of a rusty looking substance!

Id recommend POR 15ing the tank before winter Paul..

Corrosion and brittle rubbery bits..

Cleaned up and looking better, new tube and rim tape and some of Erics tyre soap, makes fitting the tyre a doddle! Only had to use one tyre lever!

Hopefully the bits will arrive tomorrow then it'll be booked in for MOT..

I'd say maybe this thread has been valuable to a lot of folk;
any chance of producing a checklist of items to check/replace/service when recovering these bikes from Withams or even from the length of winter we've had or is it a 'Minter trade secret'

See FAQs 2.5, compiled from the various jobs people have reported doing when re-commissioning. I'm quite happy to update the list on the advice of Minter

Cheers chaps! No trade secrets! Prep is along the lines of preparing a bike for a competition or in the Army days a PRE (Periodical REME Examination) basically an MOT. Never had to clean so much rust from tanks back then or replace so many perished rubber bits! The rest is a thorough service and route cables etc as HD intended..

One problem i did notice last night is that the carb pump jet is not spraying into the the mouth of the carb, 1st time ive noticed this before too. Has any one else ever noticed this or had this problem? Could account for some poor running MT's out there..

I'll soak it in carb cleaner and see if that sorts it.. Watch this space!

Yep , I've had this. At first I wondered how the vertical pipe pipe comes off the float bowl but the flat on the pipe alows you to twist it free-it's a push fit so no thread to worry about. There's a Non return valve shoved up there which might be stuck solid. There might also be a tiny o-o-ring, ????

I can never remember which way round it goes back !! Taking the pipe off, and the bits out allows you to restore a spray of fuel. I'm not sure that these are supposed to be removed, because you can't buy the part separately but they come out and push back in again easily enough.

I'll bet when you had them in service none of them would be more than 10 years old- the theoretical maximum military life before casting, most would be less than 5 years so you wouldn't get crud build up. Weren't you the lucky one !!

There's a Keihin carb refurb kit available for about Ă‚ÂŁ19 that includes all the rubber parts including the all important accelerator diaphragm that will probably fix the problem. It also has a new needle valve assembly.

Mine was split and was only pumping air....

Not quite true, or you'd be stealing the parts off the previous one as it came back from PRE to go on the next one through. :D

:lol: Nearly! In Northern Ireland we just used to use the same immaculate 'Pig' (Humber 1 Ton - which weighed 8!) which never went out the gate and just changed the number plates to which ever Pig was on PRE!!! Simples!!!
