TDI Powers 350 Engine Rebuild

Post by Minter » Mon Nov 12, 2012 8:43 pm

Evening all, Pete has given me his 350 engine to pull apart and check over and whilst apart have all the casings powder coated and finished off with nice shiney stainless fastners....

Here's the progress so far...

Image

The timing gear and head came off the other week..

Image

Image

Clutch looks like it has been replaced by a previous owner, a fairly new clutch case gasket had been used.

Image

Piston rings are as new, but piston has lots of carbon and blow by, may just have had new rings fitted, Head o rings were not OEM.. Ther is evidance of blow by between cyl and head..

Image

0.2mm gap between piston and cyl, tolerance is 0.04-0.06 new piston me thinks!

Prievious Owner was the MOD, I got it from witham and registered it.
there was no timing belt fitted and the clutch cover was not fitted correctly (internal clutch lever was broken) it was also a steel and friction plate missing, so added them.
I fitted brand new clutch springs 2yrs or so ago.

What state were the timing belt bearings and the cam pulleys in? I know the lower one was a little rough (had to spin it up in the lathe and emery cloth it)

Gary

I'm also doing an engine rebuild

I just wanted to say how useful it is that you are posting high resolution photographs of your rebuild. It's really helpful for us novices who haven't done this before!

any chance of an overall (rough) cost for the work.minus labour of course. eg rebore ,piston, rings ,gaskets etc.

Glad the rebuild posts are proving useful..

Ball park figure Brian on the motors currently being worked on is between 400 and 750.. that includes a bit for my time all new seals and gaskets, bearings where needed, piston/ rings/ clutches as necessary plus anything else that is worn/missing increases cost, all head decoked and valves lapped back in, cylinder honed then test ran on test bed for 6 minutes..

If casings require powdercoating/painting/stainless fastners that adds up another couple of hundred approx..

No two motors are the same, some come with parts already purchased, i just fit em..

At least then you'll have a motor that should last another 30 odd years!....

Update for Pete's motor! Should have powdercoated engine cases back in a week or two, then the rebuild can begin!

Have you finished moving house yet Pete!?

DON'T GET ME F&*(Ă‚ÂŁ?$% STARTED!!!!!

I really have no idea why those lazy arse twats called solicitors get paid so much when I have to keep at them all the time. Lets just say I was meant to move on 21st Dec, the contract pack arrived that morning with the wrong address for us to move to and they wouldn't return my calls!! (they shut at 5pm until the new year now)
SO at some point in 2013 We WILL move, fed up of living out of boxes!!

No rush at all on the engine (well it would be nice to have moved and got it built for Stafford Show!!

Blimey Pete sounds like you're having a bit of a nightmare. Sounds like a nice challenge to have everything squared away for Stafford including moving house!

Happy 2013! Can't be any worse than this one!
