Minter said it doesn't work even with holding the wires together, so it's something other than the switch itself it seems.

If it's only a failure if the switch is present, then just remove the switch and hide the wire ;)

Stop lamps may operate in conjunction with either the front or the rear brake, or both. On machines first used on or after 1 April 1986, the stop lamps must operate by the application of each system.

Cheers Zip! Now ill have to get it sorted just to be on the safe side! Not that Stu uses them! Have you seen his BMW brake failure vid!!
