Moscow John's Moscow Engine Rebuild

Post by Minter » Tue Jul 09, 2013 9:07 pm

Here we go!

The long awaited strip down of Johns Moscow (x2) Nordkapp motor!

The starter motor was proper seized on! Good job we never attempted to take it off when we did your clutch John!

Id spent 2 weeks squirting all the rusty bolts with penol but had to result in more aggressive means to get the starter motor off. I got there in the end and managed to get all the head bolts off no problem and take off the head and cylinder..

Great colour on the plug and valves those CV carbs do a good job! Huge amount of carbon build up as to be expected..

Enjoy the pics so far..

Looking good considering all the miles...

I'll check all the tolerences tomorrow.. overall not too bad, Cyl head will be off to the engineering firm to have the studs removed..

Great that you've started it Gary . I do have a spare unused starter motor that could go on it. I know I've been talking about using the unused 500 on my next big trip but if I end up travelling with my friend Les who rides a 225 Serrow then I might well use this engine instead. I finally did my post Pyrenees service today. I got rid of the groaning on the rear brake and hopefully sorted the oil leak which I think was one of the sump bolts. Tomorrow I have to work on my old Fourtrak :(

Penol is good - worked ok on the head bolts. The starter motor distance block had corroded to the bolts and were never coming out! They did unscrew eventually from the engine case though.

Starting to go back together now..

Image

Sump was clean as a whistle just the usual bits stick to the sump magnet..

Image

Piston in good shape once all the carbon had been removed, maybe due to low quality fuel?

The rings were still just inside tolerance which i thought remarkable considering what its been through. New rings fitted.

Image

Valves and head all de coked polished and reground. One exhaust valve had a a weird mark around it - i'll add a photo later, never seen it before but replaced it for peice of mind. May have been down to tappet adjustment on the valve but all seemed ok when pulled apart..

Image

Just waiting for the cases to come back from powder coaters this week and all should be done for N Wales repatriation service! Its hard to beleive this is the same engine thats at the beginning of the thread!
