Nice one Simon -

I do need some downpipes but knew this would be out of my reach

How strange it is what a shiny piece of metal can do to a man!!

I agree,in years to come more of us will be patching up rusty pipes as even the newest MT 350 will be coming up for 10 years old shortly.
As a club it may be worth looking into exhausts for the future. There are stainless pipes out there but when they come up we are all fighting for them. Is it feasible to have a system developed for the club that is affordable for all or am i being unrealistic?

Trouble is, that would rely on the goodwill of a fabricator member as the only way to keep prices down is to make it non-profit. There will be members that would do one us a favour and weld up some pipe if, say, another member provides the right length/ bends BUT if that starts happening at cost then he will be inundated.

I have no idea how much it would cost to make a set, be ideal if we can find a suitable end can from a common donor bike.

Plus lets not forget that KLM has now got this done and, while it is over £300 (I think), is a good product. I do have a concern that if we all buy cheap then good old Steve will end up with very few customers and will have to close. Same as even the timing belts and my large box of oil filters, the more we get independent, he and Force will have to raise the prices of other parts to offset their income. Its a very tricky situation long term, I am constantly looking for cheap parts but at the same time concerned that we have to keep the suppliers in business (highly hypocritical).
A hope for this is that the new massive influx of MTs that are going to hit Withams over the next few months should keep him occupied as only a percentage will join us.

mmm

I like your integrity, but I think that the small numbers of the club (at this time) are unlikely to be providing a sustainable income for these dealers on their own. (Mind you, when I look at the cost of my chain and spark plug/cap, perhaps we are!)

I see nothing wrong in a little free enterprise with consumables, exhausts being a consumable if they rot!

Perhaps relying on club members to provide cost price work is the wrong approach.
I know a chap at work who is a fully coded welder. He is hankering after buying another Tig set but is put off by the cost.

It may be that I could persuade him to weld up some pipes for a reasonable cost to offset the purchase price of his TIG set, everybody wins.

If someone were prepared to source the pipes I will have a chat with him.

If MOTAD are producing exhausts, it is unlikely they would have a sole agent. They sell direct to the public as well.

Perhaps the club could enquire about a purchase of 'X' number of exhausts?

I have a MOTAD on my Honda, it is an excellent exhaust and good quality stainless, so that would be a good bet.

What do you think?
