Had you have been there 60 years ago, a pump attendant would have served you. If he wasn't busy he'd offer to check your oil ( and coolant ) to try to flog you more product. If your oil wasn't up to the mark he'd volunteer to open a one-pint can and top it up. Not wishing to be thought a thief , he'd offer any excess oil for you to carry away an opened can with no lid. If you told him to keep it, it would go to the workshop.
