My MT500 - Decisions

Post by rex the runt » Mon Sep 18, 2017 3:00 pm

Hello,

I just picked this MT up last week.

Trying to decide what to do next. I've taken off the ammo boxes and panier frame. They must have weighed 30lbs plus. Will be doing a mechanical check over, and looking into doing sensible mods. Bit of a blow over paintjob, so come winter I may have to strip and re-paint. I've sent a FOI request to the MOD to see its service record. If it did go to the Gulf I might consider desert colours, were MT's repainted for desert use ? Mine has some sand coloured paint under its many layers.

Congrats on getting your bike
After checking the mechanical side of the bike, you might want to just run it 'as it is ' for a while

As for cosmetics, the expression 'Its like putting lipstick on the pig' comes to mind No matter how much work you put in the real beauty of the bike is in its ruggedness and practicality

STAY COOL

I agree, just run it and enjoy it for a while!

I've been stopped a couple of times on mine already with people asking about it. Not once has anyone commented on the paint job.... good or bad!

Hello Rex the Hunt,
you asked whether the MT500 went to the gulf,
I can confirm that they were painted with the same colour paint as used on the Tornado and Buccaneer fighter aircraft.
They were used by the RAF regiment where I was, in North West Saudi Arabia, near to the border with Jordan.
Jan-April 1991.
You could get the paint - at least a while ago, just cant remember where from.
The Rapier Squadrons painted a black emblem on the tank using their logo, 51 SQN.
Hope this helps

Rex posted over two years ago that he was selling his MTs, an interesting post nonetheless.

As an aside, I remember being attacked by a Bucanneer, he flew over my armoured car low enough to drench me in warm jet exhaust- an impressive piece of kit
