My new MT500 :D
Whooo Finally got her home.
My shin is F**cked and I need a shower already from kicking the bugger over (somewhat unsuccessful) Fired once but cut out.
I need to do the timing I bet, give the carb a good clean and swear some more at it.
Heres some pictures..
I've christened it 'Le Shuttle' In memory of Jim Burns, who pointed me in the direction to buy this.
Stand by for pleas for help

Has somone chopped the rear rack? could have had a dual seat on at one point.

Good luck with the bike mate, looks good and you have waited long enough to get one.

Re: My new MT500 :D
Is there anybody nearby that has a torque wrench and a crank locking bolt? I need to fix the timing and dont want to wait a month untill payday to get the tools I need. Anybody near by come through, it would be much appreciated.

Re: My new MT500 :D
Not really mate, I don't pretend to be a MT buff from having one for a day, but tommorow I plan on cleaning the whole fuel line and Ideally I would like to check the timing along with that just to make sure its 'all good'
I had a wee shot on it and it seemed a bit spluttery, not to mention its a complete pig to start, im fairly happy with my theory on starting it, so I'm not sure what needs done. Trial and error I suppose.

You should be able to check the timng is correct by checking the timing mark on the top and bottom pullys line up. Check the cambelt change tutorial.
If it hasn't been used in a while I would give the carb a clean and change plug ect.

Re: My new MT500 :D
A few questions if I may. Is the steering lock key universal for all 500's? (I wasnt given one) Also it seems to have a home made stainless exhaust, I'm not sure weither it would be better to get ahold of a stock one or keep it. I suppsoe giving it a good run would tell.
Cheers Nick. Heres to hoping for sun tomorrow.

Try using the ignition key in the steering lock.... should work ok.. But be very careful to remove it before you turn the handlebars or you will initiate yourself into the 'oh bollocks I've broken my key in the steering lock' club. I'm a member
I guess it would be a good idea to try a standard exhaust, but they can be pricey, and maybe it would be better to borrow one locally to try it before splashing out?
As for the starting issues... checking the timing is easy even for a non-mechanic like me- just follow the tutorial. My 500 was a complete pig to start despite the amount of swearing i did, but I solveby it completely by swapping the amal carb for a mikuni, and now I only swear when I break my ignition keys.
