Well, shoot! That was easier than I thought it would be. Bennett's seemed to have no problem with the idea of insuring me. The DVLA seems to have no problem with me owning a motorcycle in the UK, now all I have to do is pay tax and get an MOT. For an MOT is it worth it to find an "old bike friendly" MOT station? I do MOT's all the time in Papua New Guinea, I am reasonably sure that this MT will pass without advisories, (it certainly would pass if I were inspecting it in PNG).
Does it need to have both mirrors or is just one on the right enough?

I would be very surprised not to get any advisories.
They are under pressure to list some.
I tend to use an old school place and get them chatting about old bikes. He tried hard to get the brake light to go off and give me a pass.

So.... my front brake light switch is currently inoperative--should I leave it un-repaired for the MOT?
How picky do they tend to be? "No oil leaks, check that the tyres are less than X number of years old" picky, or "all the lights work, all the bearings feel tight, there's a horn and a mirror, you're good to go" picky?

Never mind, I found a current motorcycle MOT check list. I suppose a picky tester might think that my chain was on the edge of being worn out. And my front brake light switch is inop.
I have no idea what "brake efficiency" is going to mean--to me they feel pretty decent for single leading shoe drum brakes. The exhaust has surface rust, but seems soild enough.
Ah, surely they'll find plenty to nit-pick about. What does it mean to get an advisory? Can you still get an MOT? Do you have to deal with the advisories and then somehow prove that they have been dealt with?

advisories are given when the tester thinks the bike is ok for a pass but will need attention in that area before long. i guess if an advisory item fails a month later he is covering himself. no retest or anything, its left to your discretion to sort it out when you deem it necessary.

brakes are now tested on a rolling bed, i gather its all down to the numbers on the screen. 25 years ago a tester would just look at the bike, start it up, chat to you, pull the front brake lever, then explain to you that the noisy exhaust pipe wasnt on the bike when you tested it, all said whilst struggling with a bit of grit in one eye
