25 MPG !!!!

Post by Korky » Wed Jun 09, 2021 7:40 am

Recently I have run out of petrol a couple of times. This has been very annoying has I don't really think I push my luck. I live 12.5 miles from work and use my bike nearly every day. After going onto reserve the other day I managed to limp at 30mph to work. Arriving in town I filled the tank. Rode to home and back to work the next day I thought I would fill the tank again to see how much I had used, the bike took 4.64 litres which is 1.02 Imp gallons.
My HD had a brand new 500e motor fitted by the previous owner and a new Mikuni carb. I do ride hard but 25 MPG is about the same as my Defender, I used to get around 60mpg from my old Evo big twins.
I would welcome any advice and suggestions on how to improve my consumption.

The Mikuni is not that fuel efficient but my MT500 with Mikuni still does ~42 mpg even with hard use. If it was burning that much fuel then the engine would be very lumpy in use and the plugs would be completely black from unburnt carbon. If the latter is seen to be the case, I would check the carb is not flooding due to a problem with the carb float and valve.

My 405 had a Mikuni and was throwing petrol down its throat like Gazza on a night out.
Had to keep taking the plug out to clean it as well.
The Dellorto sorted it out.
Now its a 555 with a delly and only does 100 miles before filling up but boy does it give a lot of smiles per miles. :D

Thanks guys for the advice, sounds like a Dellorto is needed. Cash is tight at the moment but it sounds worth saving for!

if I were you I'd strip the carb, clean it , check
diaphram is intact and make sure you have the right jets fitted, etc Cost would be minimal and you could use the cash saved on fuel towards a better carb. You've got nothing to lose
