I recently bought a 1985 MT500 which I’m intending to use just for fun. No restoration but I’ll keep it in good condition and to start that process it’s getting a new loom because nothing works other than the headlight .
I have started it twice but I think that was more luck than judgement so next job will be sorting the carb and a starting routine. I’ll change the belt as well but I’m no mechanic so I fully expect to have to ask for plenty of help.
It will be great to connect with you all and I look forward to browsing the forum.

Hi CJ, welcome to the forum, great choice the 500, loads of info here about starting , carbs etc, just purchased anew loom for my 500, the original is getting on in age, just like me haha

Welcome to the forum. Investing in a new loom makes great sense. Also, I'm glad to see that your priorities are right- get the bike mechanically sound then USE it. All too often we got opening posts of 'Just bought an MT, what's the paint code?'

Hi Gents, I just picked up my used MT 500 Armstrong today. It is a 87 I think. It is a Canadian version with an electric start. Rob Cassin from West Point NY USA.

Welcome Rob. For clarity you have an MT500EC ( electric start Canadian). The term MT500 usually refers to kick start only bikes. There are also MT500EJ (Jordan) and CV500 (Civilian) versions

If you download the 500 manual, from memory some variations are shown. I don't see any reason why the Canadian and Jordanian specifications would be exactly the same, nor would I expect the manual to be complete. Supplementary pages could easily have been produced .
Armstrong built variants to suit the customer- the police trialled bikes with and without fairings, the Post Office spec unknown but no need for gun mount, the CV spec had a smaller front wheel etc There is a factory built MT500 fitted with a sidecar for example
MT documentation wasn't publicly available, and rightly so. You are free to think anything you wish but it doesn't make it accurate. The ex factory spec could easily have been modified once bikes were in service. A 'Squadron mod ' could be anything to suit requirements and would be undocumented.
