MT 500
C701 FAH
193205 - looks like it has been done by hand
000610 - the 10 is slightly offset

Q1. What does this tell me about the provenance of the machine?
Q2. Who do I write to for the military records?

Fanks

Probably was done by hand; small manyfacturers at that time would not have had mechanical VIN stamping machines.
You should see my vin plate! It looks like it was stamped in the dark wearing welding goggles!

Here's mine:

MT500
Mil.-Reg. 04KE97
Chassis no: 000497
Engine no: 212403
Date into Service: 20/08/1985
Cast Date: 01/02/1995

It was stored for a year in the fwd veh depot Recklinghausen and was then transfered to the 110 Provost Coy 1 RMP where it served till it's disposal.
any way to find units served.is it a falkland vet?
I got the military history of mine from the RLC Museum. You just need the frame number. It costs a tenner to check if they store your B-Vehicle card and
35 quid to get the information on it.

Ok- so if it's still in the Merlin Database a request for the history refering to the Freedom of Information Act would have been for free  :?

It's free from me :-) However I think they can charge for FOI request.

I got the history of my 90 Defender and Sankey for free because of the FOI. I just wrote a mail to the MOD. But that's just because the MOD still got the Merlin Reports for these vehicles in their database.
For my Ferret I had to pay because it's B Vehicle card was transfered from the MOD to the RLC Museum.
But it's good to know someone who has access to the Merlin Reports 8-)

In my day armoured vehicles Ferret Saladin Saracen Fox were all A vehicles.
B vehicles were soft skin Land Rovers, Bedfords.
Scammel ? , probably another classification

The big difference to use was that there were no forms and fuel logs with A vehicles whereas to move B vehicles you needed a form and log sheet to record fuel usage
