Who's got the highest VIN-number on his MT350?

For all that relates to both Armstrong MT 500 and Harley Davidson MT 350

Who's got the highest VIN-number on his MT350?

Post by Flying Dutchman » Sat Oct 27, 2018 9:01 pm

Just curious, because i can't find the exact MT350 productionnumber anywhere. I've got number 53, number 104 and number 219 (from1996)

Thanks,
Jan

A forum Search on 'Number explained' will take you to a few posts, one by Raglan who has partly copied information and on by MT Pocket which has the full details from a post I made.

No production figures were even published but the earliest first MT350 were made in 1993, from memory I think it must have been from April onwards. The year codes run through to 1998 . Twmtomas has a frame number ending VY000298 .

V = Year code for 1998
Y= York , all MTs were built at the York factory
000298 = The production number for that year

So does anyone have an MT350 with a year code of V and a production number higher than 000298 ?

NB The production year doesn't exactly correspond to the actual year, so some bikes were competed in December but have a year code showing the following year

Just to complicate matters the HDMT500 was produced in 1999 and 2000 so they will all beat an MT350 ! I have seen two different sets of numbers believed to be produced in those years, the total being about 450

We did have a forum member who worked at York, and said production was about 3 bikes a week, so total bikes produced would have been around 3500

All a long winded way of saying that Jan , you haven't got the youngest MT

So did they start with a new number 0001 every new productionyear? That explains why we've all got low numbers if they only produced a few bikes a week.

Yep, reset to 000001 every new production year

When Withams had their big sale to clear their MT350s in 2012 ? there was one with a factory fitted 500 engine and the VIN reflected that. I will see if I still have the sales catalogue showing the exact VIN

There will be six of those, one for each of the six years of production.

Mine's 000062 from 1993, so fairly early all told.

My first MT350 was on the Army records as a Right hand Dip 1993, RY000030 . Date into service 28/09/93 Disposal date 29/07/03 , sold 16/10/03. The Gross Replacement Cost was £3863.57. The chassis number started 1HD4LT. I'm not sure exactly when the code changed to start 1HD6RLT but quite early in the MT production run

So some early bikes did make it, although mine had had an engine change at some point in its life. There was a lot of swarf trapped in the primary oil filter, so I can only presume some failure had led to an engine replacement
