Welcome to the forum

Whilst i have never had a 500, I have seen 500 owners struggle to start start their bikes and others start theirs easily .

I once went on an MT trip when one 500 owner who struggled to start his bike After a few days of starting his bike repeatedly it seemed effortless There is a sight marker (often in need of re-painting), which helps riders to put in effort at the right time - the old hands don't need it

If it were me, I'd go through the whole bike, inner tubes, rim tapes, brakes, clean all electrical connections, clean carb, clean all 2 oil filters and oil strainer, check cambelt setting Valve clearance check , renew spark plug

Welcome to the forum Mark,

Easy to start with a bit of practice and set up about right! We use Mikuni and Dellorto Carbs and Dyno'd them to make sure they were jetted correctly.

A good service and carb clean helps alot.

Good luck!
