350 or 500

Post by marcusjsmith » Sat Jul 28, 2018 7:57 am

Hi, I've joined because im looking to buy my first MT, but just can't make my mind up whether to go for a 350 or 500! Any help would be most welcome!
What are the main pro's and con's? Is there much difference in power and fuel economy, top end speed ?

Welcome to the forum

Re your questions, check out the thread entitled Intro, in this Welcome section, from a member who joined just before you . I posted salient details

There are two forum members who live close to Winsford and who have 350 and 500 If you could chat to them and see their bikes, you'd learn a lot

Top speed, an MT350 in standard trim an indicated low 70s MT500 10-15mph faster BUT these bikes aren't designed for high speed cruising. In the cut and thrust of the Traffic Light Grand Prix on a 350 you will lose out to your granny

The strength on an MT is its versatility , they can go anywhere ( fording depth- specification is about 15 inches)

The main con on the 500 is kickstart only, on left side, you need a well set up good carb , a strong leg and the knack.
350 just press the button and off it goes

Yes you can BUT, you need
Cut the frame to accommodate the starter ( needs to be done by a professional to ensure structural integrity)
Starter motor plus associated gears
Lower engine housing
Change balance shaft
Switchgear and wiring
Larger capacity battery ( NB The standard size MT350 battery is larger than the 500, hence doesn't fit but I believe smaller modern powerful batteries will fit)

If you bought a 350 then a top end conversion to 405 by swapping the head you get similar power to a standard 500 You can get away with minor changes to the standard carb but most fit a different carb
