MT500 pannier racks

Post by Bonnielad » Sun Jan 24, 2016 9:12 pm

At the recent Newark Classic Bike Show, I had a quick conversation with a chap called John Jackson who runs his own business called 'Classic Racks'
Given that the MT500 pannier racks are in such short supply I asked him about the possibility of him making some for us. Basically, if there is sufficient call and he can have some patterns he would be happy to make some for the club. Price would be subject to numbers so I throw it open to the members. What do you think?

Johns contact details are:

There were quite a few members after these last year , they are very difficult to get hold if so I would say there is a market for these. I am sure that a set could be lent to them for copying if that helps

if we could stand the cost. maybe the club could buy the required number of racks to get them made then sell them through the shop.perhaps make a small profit for the club funds.

just a thought ;)

Saves people modding the 500 rack and of course worsening the supply issue

Well judging by the comments there may be some mileage in this. I'll get back in touch with him and see if we can sort more details.

So far so good. I have spoken with John and sent him some pictures. He would need samples to copy. He makes racks in mild or stainless steel. I suggested that we would probably want mild steel to be painted or powder coated.
We discussed 2 options:
1) for the club to purchase a few sets and keep them on stock.
2) to obtain a price from him then simply refer each interested member to 'Classic Bike Racks' as an 'approved supplier'.

At the moment the ball is in his court awaiting a price.

Depending on price of course. 350 compatible racks could be popular too?

He's looking for about £100 per pair. Or possibly a bit less once he's actually seen the physical items. He would be happier if we could buy them 2 or 3 pairs at a time as a club. This would be in mild steel, raw finish. He is based in Cumbria so he was also concerned about carriage but I suggested it would always be possible to sort a meet up at Stafford (or something similar). So the next step would be to get hold of a pair for him to look at. Are there any available?
