Riding by candlelight

I dont know folks, this 12w low 12w high just does not do it for me. Can anyone tell me if the lamp (bulb) fitting on the headlight is the H4 fitting? If it is I have found a site doing them cheapish and its 40w low 45w high which will save me waiting at the side of the road for a car to go in front in lanes and people might stop thinking I am a pushbike and just pulling out.

if its the 500 then look for a BA20D halogen lamp. you can get them in a higher wattage.

BA20D in mine is 35w/35w . a bit feeble and i need to eat a few carrots! But its just about useable . I have heard a few horror stories about higher wattage halogen bulbs being used and overheating the bulb holder and overloading the wiring so be careful if going more powerful than the standard bulb

cheers guys, i got a chinese headlamp that i might stick on my conker (jeff duke helmet for the young fkrs) to save overloading the electrics :D

On that note with a lager watage light you could install a relay set up to use the old switch gear but supply current straight from the battery on a newly installed cable which would also reduce the voltage drop inherant in the old system.

I fitted the relay kit from Rex's Speedshop, then fitted an H4 halogen bulb by turning an alloy adaptor ring and removing the original bulb holder. The dip beam is now very good but the head beam is poor. From the front its very bright but its so scattered that its not much use. Maybe my DIY adaptor is the wrong thickness? I think I made it 6mm thick.

Yep but Rex is no longer making the units after the last batch was run.As to your bulb its probably not in the focal point of the lens being further back than normal.

Two relays, some wire, some crimp terminals and the bulb of your choice it really isn't rocket science DIY

Yes, sorry I thought I'd read they were back in stock but I must have dreamt it. (Happens a lot, its an age thing!) I know its not focussed but I only guessed the thickness of the adapter and If I get that right the dip will probably then be no good. I'm happy to use the dip only, its pretty good and the head's a great daytime light! (really bright!)
I did my own upgrade on my AJS 500 twin with 2 Bosch car relays. It was cheap (free!) and worked really well, but seems a bit of a clumsy way compared to Rex's neat job. :D
