I thought i would start a new topic regarding the above,
some of us swear by paper maps and a compass
i've used a sat nav[gps] for a few years now [both home and abroad] and i prefer this
the problem is i learn just enough to get by, ive found it struggles when trying to navigate trails which over the last few years im riding more,
so i've just bought a more dedicated garmin montana,[its baffling me at the moment] this leads me to this point,
i think a thread that follows a novice [me] through the complications of building routes etc for off /on road may help others ,
i shall add to this .

Re: Navigation
I'll bet you bought the 610 Camo so you don't have to paint it green like everything else.

“Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.” (Adams, 2009).

You all may be interested to know that the TRF are currently working on a definitive UK legal trails map. It is their intention to update it every 6 months to take account of winter closures and any new TRO's. It will be available free to TRF members and should go live before the end of the year. I imagine we will be able to download a gpx file???

Ahh,
This is what I mean Steve, here are my two gps devices
With the same gpx file loaded (part of the upcoming Yorkshire dales meet )
As you can see the more dedicated unit reads it correctly,
The road biased unit also reads it correctly (it does )
But the road unit navigates via roads only to get to
Each waypoint (pin or flag)
