DEFENDER 90

I had a defender 90 a few years ago and i was thinking of getting another one,they are getting on a bit now age wise plus they have gone quite expensive is it worth getting one now or are they to old for every day use ,thanks keith

My neighbours son uses one everyday without fail. It's a non turbo dieesel short wheelbase. Seems more than good enough for the job of getting him to from and round the farm without any mollycoddling.

If you can weld buy a similar age Discovery for a third of the price instead.

And end up doubling what you originally spent in welding rods, wire and gas😁😁

Surely the 90 can only increase in value? Another good reason to put up with the draughts.

200 Tdis are a good bet - nice engine, very usable. The older Td and NA engines were horrible.

I've got a 110 Puma currently - goes well, essentially a modern car - but I preferred the "honest" nature and simplicity of my previous 200 engined Defender. TD5s are also good, if properly maintained.

Usual rules apply re Landies - rust, rust, rust... whether thats 1975, 1995, 2015...

Im running a exmod 1986 110 FFR purley as a cart horse for work with the N/A engine

Compaired to a small van it ticks all the boxes for me, the big thing for me is loading, it can be fully loaded and i mean fully loaded ;) and it looks normal on the road put the same load in a small van it looks like its on its knees! Then you are just asking for mr plod to stop and have a chat,

Regards to fuel povided you dont flog it down the motorway at + 70mph it works out about the same as a fully loaded van

Your not going to break any speed records so give your self a bit of extra time !

The heater is the best ive ever had very unusal for landrover not sure if the mod spec was higher?

Down sides are the the lack of noise isulation, no power steering (not needed on the road but when in tight spots would be handy)

Upgrade the seat pad for driver then you will find a bit of extra confort over longer distances.

And finally if your handy with a tool box most jobs can be done at home. I think its all down to maintaince really little and often goes a long way

So to some up.. for 30 odd years old im happy, the old gal does the job, if your thinking of getting one look hard for a good example, check for play in the bushes, old fuel pumps leaks ( a problem with the rubber seals due to modern derv can be a expensive fix) and the hidden areas for rust.

I've got a 300tdi 90, its happy pottering around town at about 50mph but I don't like to push it much harder. It depends how many miles you do on the daily as to whether it would suitable. Mine is mostly reserved for weekends and short trips now, if want a good daily driver look at td5's and puma engine models.

One thing is for sure you won't loose money on a defender these days, just make sure it's well locked up as they get pinched often ☚ī¸
