Looks like the liner has broken up or maybe you have ingested something down the intake?

A Sportax CC upgrade should sort it though. Interested to know what happened.

The debris on the piston, is not carbon but mashed up bits of piston. It seems to me that the liner has cracked around the top, and the top piston ring has gone into this crack on the down stroke ripping the top edge off the piston and pulling the liner down slightly. Has anyone known anything like this happen before, or are my assumptions wrong.

From what I can see in the pictures Gronk your assumption is right
I've seen a few piston crowns come away before but not the liner
Hopefully the liner failure is just a one off

On the positive side it looks like no rubbish ended up in your bottom end

Yeah None of the rubbish has gone past the piston rings, and the engine sounded sweet until this happened so I plan to leave the bottom end well alone.

Oil level was OK and and you could see the oil pumping round by looking down the filler cap. I checked this only the day before the Cat and Fiddle meet (day of the brake down).
