I have finally heard back from the Army Secretariat, Army Headquarters. This is what they have to say:
Dear Mr @*&%
Thank you for your email of 14 January in which you asked for the following information:
I am the current owner of an Ex military Harley Davidson MT350. The frame number is
1HD6RLTXXXXXXXX.
Please could you provide me with the ERM number assigned to this motorcycle, along with
the history of the units etc that this motorcycle was assigned to whilst in military service.
A search of our records has been completed but I regret that no information within the scope of
your request is held.
So what do I do now?

What do you do now ?
No information 'within the scope of your request' , that could mean no information at all or simply being pedantic You asked them for specific information, you got a specific answer.
When I asked for information several years ago pre-Merlin, it was dealt with by another office and they gave me details of the purchase price, assessment grade , locations stored and units issued to with dates. I think they've changed their system/ procedures twice since then and far less information is released
MT500 information had to be searched manually and they charged for it MT350 info was free. One of our forum members got a copy of some MT data, he may be able to help

Re: Data Plate
Essentially my request was:
"Please could you provide me with the ERM number assigned to this motorcycle, along with
the history of the units etc that this motorcycle was assigned to whilst in military service."
So all I really asked for was a history of the machine.

Re: Data Plate
You may find the military number on the rear mudguard, underneath the number plate. Withams usually put it on in black marker so they could track the bikes when they were selling them.
I did get the service history from the MOD for a S2A lightweight Land Rover from the VIN number. But they are not as keen to spend the time finding this information now. Best to quote the "Freedom of Information act", that is their current obligation to provide this type of information.
