In 1997 I bought my MT500 direct from the army surplus auction. It had 1100km on the clock which I thought was a must be a mistake. I got it home and it wouldn't start. After Mick Keogh of Sportax motorcycles recommended a Dell'Orto carb and a bit of tinkering, she fired up. I bought it, having not had bikes for a dozen years, to go on my honeymoon. Luckily my new wife was quite petite round the rear. The odometer must have been correct because I could feel the engine loosen up on our 2000-mile trip round France. In 2000 we had our daughter so I sold the bike to a neighbour. I used to hear him start it up across the valley to take his daughter to school every week day. Last year I bought it back, somewhat rusty and sad-looking having been stored in a leaking outbuilding. It was working when I put it in there, he said. Hmm. I fancy riding down to Morocco and beyond if possible, next year, my sixtieth. Needs attention.
