I was thinking of water ingress. Given that these are quite expensive to replace, and the bike is intended for off road use, it looks at little exposed. I'd be tempted to create some sort additional barrier. Tricky as you don't want to create something that traps water either..

Look below the left hand side of the handlebars and tilt your neck to look at the frame

If you can't find the number because it has been ground off , your bike may have been stolen. The number should be the same as on your V5
